Bonefish Some of the best bonefishing in the world is found on the flats of Florida Keys. The best concentrations of bones in the Florida keys are found in the upper keys, by coincidence Key Largo is in the upper keys and fishing for bonefish is year round only regulated by the weather conditions. Best tackle to use is 10lb. sin or less or a 10wt. fly rod. As an added prize while Bonefishing or Tarpon fishing you occasionally catch a Permit, grouper, barracuda or shark. Bonefish are the craftiest fish of the Florida flats only surpassed by the permit. Bonefish are primarily shallow water fish just 1-4 feet is best. Sight fishing is a good way to catch one but you can also fish for them in a little deeper water by chumming for them if your boat is to big for the flats or it is not a blue bird day and the wind is blowing or the water dirty. Poling the around is one way of finding them but if you are skilled enough to know their patterns and the tides you can stake up wait for them to come to you, then present an accurate cast ahead of them but don't bean them on the head or hit their tail as more likely than not you will see them leave the flats a high rate of speed Best tackle to use is 6 or 10 lb. test either spin or bait caster. The average size is 5 to 7 pounds. They can make 100 yard runs in a blink of an eye reverse direction and be back where they started without breaking a sweat looking to cut you off on something so hold your rod high when fighting one. They eat shrimp and crabs, small jigs and flies. Stealth is a necessity so don't stomp or open and close hatches loudly, loud noises in and around the boat will surly keep them away for your area. wear light colored clothes to blend in with the sky and surroundings.
